PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is the Government of India's flagship rooftop solar scheme, launched in February 2024 with a target of powering 1 crore (10 million) households with rooftop solar by 2027. It combines a direct cash subsidy with low-interest loans and net metering, aiming to give eligible households up to 300 units of free electricity every month.

What is the Scheme?
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a Government of India initiative to promote rooftop solar installation across households nationwide. It combines central financial assistance with net metering to make solar affordable and accessible.
Who is Eligible?
The scheme is designed for residential households across India. Eligibility criteria include having a suitable rooftop, a valid electricity connection, and meeting the household consumption requirements defined by the scheme guidelines.
Subsidy Information
The scheme provides central financial assistance based on system capacity. Subsidy amounts and structure are set by the government and may be updated periodically. We help you understand the latest applicable subsidy for your system size.
How to Apply
The application process is done through the national solar portal. We assist you throughout the application and approval process, including registration and document submission.
How Installation Works
After approval, our team conducts a site survey, designs your system, installs premium panels and inverter, sets up net metering, and commissions the system. The entire process is handled end-to-end by our experienced engineering team.
How the subsidy works
Central subsidy per kW
The government provides direct financial assistance based on your system's capacity, paid straight to your bank account.
Apply on the national portal
Registration and application happen through the official PM Surya Ghar portal, linked to your local DISCOM.
Installation & net metering
A registered vendor installs your system, and your DISCOM installs a net meter to track power you export to the grid.
Subsidy paid via DBT
Once your net meter and commissioning are verified, the subsidy is transferred directly to your bank account — typically within about 30 days.
Subsidy by system size
Central financial assistance (residential) scales with your system capacity, up to a fixed ceiling.
| System Size | Subsidy Amount |
|---|---|
| Up to 1 kW | ₹30,000 |
| Up to 2 kW | ₹60,000 |
| 3 kW | ₹78,000 |
| 4 kW | ₹78,000 |
| 5 kW and above | ₹78,000 |
Group Housing Societies / RWAs installing shared solar for common facilities can claim ₹18,000 per kW instead, capped at 500 kW total capacity (calculated at 10 kW per house).
Which solar system do you need?
Your average monthly electricity bill is the fastest way to gauge roughly what size system — and which subsidy slab above — applies to you.
| Monthly Bill | Approx. System Size |
|---|---|
| ₹1,500–₹2,500 | 1–2 kW |
| ₹2,500–₹4,000 | 2–3 kW |
| ₹4,000–₹6,000 | 3–5 kW |
| ₹6,000+ | 5 kW+ |
These ranges are indicative only. Your actual system size depends on your consumption profile, available roof area, local solar irradiation, shading, sanctioned electrical load, and other site-specific factors — confirmed during a free site visit.
Who is eligible?
Residential
Fully eligible for the CFA subsidy. You need to be an Indian citizen with a suitable rooftop, a valid electricity connection, and no prior rooftop solar subsidy already claimed on the property.
Commercial & Industrial
Not eligible for this residential CFA subsidy. Commercial and industrial properties can still go solar via net metering and claim accelerated depreciation instead — see our Commercial & Industrial Solar offering.
Why this scheme matters
Offset up to 300 units of electricity a month for an average household with the right system size — effectively free power.
Access collateral-free loans at concessional interest rates (around 7%) for residential systems up to 3kW.
The subsidy is paid directly to your bank account via DBT — no middlemen, no deductions.
Panels carry 25+ year performance warranties, so your investment keeps paying off long after the subsidy is used.
Step-by-step application process
Register on the portal
Sign up on the national PM Surya Ghar portal with your electricity consumer number and state/DISCOM details.
Apply for rooftop solar
Submit your application; your DISCOM reviews it and grants feasibility approval.
Get your system installed
Choose a registered vendor — we handle design, installation and commissioning end-to-end.
Submit plant & net meter details
Provide installation details through the portal so your DISCOM can inspect and approve the net meter.
Receive your subsidy
After the commissioning certificate is issued, submit your bank details — the subsidy is credited within about 30 days.
Common questions
₹30,000 for a 1kW system, ₹60,000 for a 2kW system, and a maximum of ₹78,000 for systems of 3kW or larger — the subsidy is capped at the 3kW slab even for bigger systems.
No — the PM Surya Ghar CFA subsidy is only for residential households. Commercial and industrial properties can still install rooftop solar, but through net metering and tax-based incentives like accelerated depreciation instead.
Group Housing Societies / Resident Welfare Associations can claim CFA for solar powering common facilities, at ₹18,000 per kW, capped at 500 kW capacity (calculated at 10kW per house).
Typically about 30 days after your DISCOM verifies the net meter installation and commissioning certificate, paid directly to your bank account.
Not necessarily, but the scheme also offers collateral-free loans at around 7% interest for systems up to 3kW, making the upfront cost even more manageable.
Disclaimer: PM Surya Ghar subsidy eligibility, CFA amounts, documentation requirements, timelines and approval are subject to applicable Government of India/MNRE guidelines and DISCOM procedures. Exergie Energy does not guarantee subsidy approval or a specific subsidy amount.
